I’ve made a little discovery, and I must say I have Brightest Young Things’ slightly off color articles, SILTF see here and here, to thank for alerting me to this very amazing hidden jem.
On 14th, and about W, there is a shady looking little gas station called Lowest Price, or something to that effect ( they do have cheap gas by the way). If you happen to be brave enough to venture inside this little gas station, you’ll be greeted by a lovely, clean, friendly cutely decorated little sandwich shop called Urban Taste or it might be Fast Gourmet, they aren’t the best at branding. I’ve eaten their twice this week and have yet to be disappointed.
Their menu is diverse, with bbq, vegetarian dishes, cubanos and an interesting selection of sides, such as yuca, lemongrass coleslaw and battered eggplant.
The food is, to put it mildly, fantastic. Sandwiches are huge, and come with little shoe string french fries. So far, I’ve tried their Cubano (probably the best I’ve had, the mustard is wonderful) the Mason’s bbq Chicken sandwich, the Mushroom panini and the pulled pork sandwich. Most sandwiches are about $8.50. I can’t wait to go back and try everything else on the menu. For a casual, delicious and filling food spot, this place is seriously a gem in the U St. and in fact DC area.
The mushroom panini was fantastic, a portabello mushroom, doused in some sort of olive, feta paste and covered in cheese. The bread is warm and toasty and the juices spill onto the fries, and you’re tasting heaven. The Pulled Pork is mixed with pineapple and topped with their lemongrass coleslaw, the bun is toasted, and Mmmm mmm mm, just the right mix of sour, sweet and crunchy.
There are about 4 tables, and the place is always bustling, but not over full. Definitely check it out especially Jodi and Caity since it’s so close to your place! And take me with you!
