I’m really saddend about the recent closing of this outdoor Latin Food market in Adam’s Morgan. I’ve actually never eaten at one of these stands, so I have no idea whether the food is delicious, or terrible. All I know, is that the DC government is knowingly protecting established businesses at the expense of the people who run these stalls.
The restaurant business is no doubt a tough one, and I understand the concerns of stationary restaurants, but the role of government is to make it possible for everyone to do business. Not to pick winners and losers. These restaurants weren’t being forced out of business because of this market. Yet they took away a means for the people of Unity Market to provide for themselves.
I’ve heard a rumor that this market might be moved to the park near my house, and i hope it’s true, these people have every right in the world to sell their wares.
