Need ideas!

So, today is Pi day, and predictably, I’m attending a pie event this evening ( last year I hosted one… for someone who doesn’t really care at all that’s a lot of celebration!)

Anyway, I’m having trouble coming up with a delicious filling for my pie. I made a dough with flour and cornmeal last night, and would like to do something savory.

Originally I’d thought cheese, and potatoes, Now I’m thinking about mushrooms, or spinach.  Also I have some thick cut bacon I could use…  (remind me to tell you about my food adventures in Ottawa!)

So, help, what kind of pie should I make?

I love that on the weekends

mmy home becomes a test kitchen, with ingredients on hand to make almost anything I have a hankering for.

On the docket today is a champagne sorbet, attempt 2 at macrons ( this time lime scented sandwiched with homemade lime curd) and  a couple other as yet undecided cookies for an ice cream sandwich party on valentine’s day.

That doesn’t include the myriad cocktail experiments G has been attempting with his new muddler and cocktail stirrer.

America’s Test Kitchen, I’m giving you a run for your money!

The other night I made myself a lovely dinner, based off of this cauliflower “steak” recipe. Instead of harissa, I used a dollop of hummus and a spoonful of fresh salsa (that delicious kind from Trader Joe’s). It was a simple meal, but oh so satisfying and delicious, and all I wanted to do was tell everyone about it!
I made myself giggle, because really… I want to tell everyone about nearly every meal I eat. My first thought is to post it as a facebook status, or maybe let my email chain now…. This is the very behavior everyone mocks social media for!
“who cares what someone ate for breakfast” is almost always the refrain when putting down sites like twitter and facebook.
But the simple fact is, I do! and I love to share it, and judging by the likes I get, people like knowing when I make delicious things!
I’m not really sure what this post is about except for me stating the obvious fact… I love talking about food!
One other thing that’s burning a hole in my brain: I just got an almost lovely lunch form a halal food truck, chickpeas, ground lamb, chicken, perfect rice…. except they smothered everything in a white creamy sauce that was just awful, frustrating really. So dear halal food truck guy, lay off the sauce!
and that’s all folks!

Throwing a Bridal Shower in 2 hours or less

My dear friend Katherine is getting married this weekend, so I thought it would be nice to throw a small get together for her to kick off the wedding week.

Problem was, My mom was in town last week, then I was in Seattle, then I had a wedding to attend Saturday, so I had almost no time to pull things together!

How did I do it, you ask? Here’s how.  I used what food stuffs I had in my kitchen, plus some things I’d gathered for Hurricane Irene preparedness (Oh yeah, that was happening this weekend too!)

So here’s how:

1. I purchased these cute flower garlands from Paper Source in Seattle and put them together Saturday evening.

2. Woke up around 10:30 Sunday and had G buy some groceries for me while I tidied the house

3. Got started on this cake lime-yogurt cake, beautiful, simple and hurricane Irene prompted me to buy 7 limes for $1 at the local latin gorcery. Rather than make a blackberry sauce, I smeared a jar of Blackberry jam I had on hand on top

4. I had some leftover seedy bread so I made a panzanella of cucumber, tomato, red onion and avocado.

5. turned to my old standby party recipe, rice tossed with herbed goat cheese, and a mixture of vegetables, this time I used zuzhinni, red and yellow peppers and red onion. The goat cheese adds a really interesting flavor to this dish.

finally I threw out some crackers and cheese (G’s idea) set the table up with all the accoutrements, and set out some booze and mixers (gin & white rum, grapefruit juice, ginger ale and limes)

And voila! Lovely bridal shower in almost no time at all!  It’s certainly a hectic race in those two hours, but totally doable if you use staples that you keep on hand, like rice, a few vegetables etc.

Now, my farm share has overloaded me with eggplant, any suggestions on what to do with it?

Summer time!

I’m loving how prepared for summer my refrigerator finally is!  I’ve got a jug of home made iced tea, and a freezer full of home made berry sorbet  to keep me cool on hot summer days. Now I just can’t wait for my first CSA vegetable delivery this week to really dive into the season.
